What is an IUD?
An IUD is a small, T-shaped device that’s placed in your uterus to prevent pregnancy.
Depending on the type of IUD you select, it can be left in place to prevent pregnancy for up to 10 years. If you decide to have children, it’s also easily removable during an office visit with Dr. Kuperman.
While IUDs are more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy, they don’t protect you against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
How does an IUD work?
An IUD creates changes inside your uterus, so pregnancy doesn’t occur. Not only do these changes create a uterine environment that makes fertilization by the sperm difficult, but they also prevent your egg from implanting.
In addition to the IUD itself changing the uterine environment, some also come with low levels of hormones. This type of IUD prompts changes with the uterine lining that prevent egg implantation and alters your cervical mucus to inhibit sperm movement.
Is an IUD right for me?

An IUD is a valid birth control option for most women, but women should avoid IUD's if specific issues are present, such as:

What can I expect during IUD placement?
Your IUD placement occurs during an office visit with Dr. Kuperman and may feel similar to a Pap smear. It usually takes approximately five minutes.
During your IUD placement, Dr. Kuperman uses a speculum to hold your vaginal walls open. She uses a unique tool to insert the IUD through your cervix and into your uterus. You may experience mild cramping or discomfort, but it passes quickly.
Following your IUD placement, you may experience spotting or cramping for a few months as your body adjusts.
